SACU 2004 Championship ENDURO

Round 3 - Mellville MC - Pathhead Enduro - Day 2

18th April 2004

Day Two - and what a change. Same course in reverse - but heavy overnight rain transformed the event from a fast trail ride into a tough enduro. Several hills were cut out  and the second test was just part of the course now.  This was definately an event worth finishing and all those who completed the full number of laps knew they had been in an enduro. Well done to the Melville club for altering the course where needed and keeping everything flowing.

The course was always rideable but was very slippy in places and required a delicate throttle. The test was very slippy and even getting round was tough - with some riders choosing some "new" lines. Several deep ruts had developed from the 1st day - but could be ridden round - you don't need to follow the brown line. The end of the test proving the hardest part with a tough off camber just before the end cards.

The rest of the day was damp in places but no real bogs to contend with. Careful line selection avoided any deep ruts. The steep climb off the railway ws cut out after the first lap with riders then being guided across the road crossing. Good job to the two lads there and to all the other helpers and marshalls who kept the event going.

One rider had a shocking experience on his way round after tangling with an electric fence. Is the power on ? Yes - no - yes - no - damn! Thats one way to recharge your battery !  Hugh O'Neill had a nasty crash on the open part of the course and was helped to the first aid.His helmet was smashed and is still not sure what happened. "Little's Rock" claims another victim. OK now but a bit bruised.

In the experts Crawford Carrick-Anderson made up for his snapped chain on the SAturday with a win. Pushed hard by Richard Hay and Phil Fallows. Only a few seconds separating all the top riders.

Graeme Naismith made it to the top of the over 40's after missing the "easy" Saturday ride. Ian Paterson coming in second to make his claim for honors this year on his new KTM. Third was Andy Flockhart - keeping up his championship hopes for 2004.

Alan Lauder topped the Clubman class doing only the one day - to just beat Craig Jagla - with Michael Scott claiming another 3rd place. DAve DOnald was pushing hard at the end of the race to ensure he did not hour out and met the marshalls coming back to check on him. His language was " colourful" as he indicated he did not have time to stop and chat. Well done for finishing a very tough event.

In the Sporstsman Grant Miller claimed the win just  ahead of Andy Hobbs and Kevin Ostroznik in 3rd. A tough event for Sportsmen they all did well to finish the full two laps.

ANother great event - and we look forward to the next round - the SBEC event at Little Clyde . Rocks and mud -should be fun.

And a final note - from one of our time keepers. Who stand and time you all day. Say hello - and ta on your last lap.

I’m not one of those girls that hate being covered in mud but what I had to put up with at the weekend was just a tad too much. I’m sure some of the riders enjoyed spraying me with mud more than necessary. Your rider numbers are duly noted and 5 seconds were added to your special test time (only joking…. before anyone starts to complain!!!!).

However, I will give you an insider tip. Before you start the special test, if it’s muddy, do what Crawford does and rub your hands in the grass and then get a handful of grass to clean your handlebars to get more grip. But since Murray being No 1 and all, had to show off and go one better he did the bum shuffle. This involves getting your backside to the ground and shuffling. Which I have to say was rather amusing.

One thing Viv, Jackie and I agreed was that seeing the riders with snot and mud covered faces was that hopefully they could only look better (I stress the hopefully!!)

By the next Enduro I hope to be getting a suntan instead of a mudpack!!

Love and Kisses…….well not with the faces I see!

Rachel ‘the almighty special test starter’ Patrick
