North East Enduo Club
14th July 2002 Otterburn

The Border Reivers were off again with a large contingent of 21 Scots riders taking part in the NEEC Otterburn Millenium Experience 2002. Just over the border it turned out to be a dry day ( so we knew we weren't in Scotland) but not too hot - just right for what Ian Bell and his marshalls had planned for us.

100 riders started at 10: 01 led off by Karl Dungait. The Parc Ferme etc was set up on an old airfield and provided ample hard standing. There was even a large barbecue set up (Burger van doesn't do it justice) to give the riders a good breakfast before they set off. All we knew was that we had   some 35 miles per lap but no idea of the terrain. With the clubman doing 94 miles and riding for 5 + hours it was going to be a long day.

All photos were taken by George Paterson - thanks. They are small but if you wish a bigger picture - e- mail me.

See the bottom of page for results.

The course was awesome and took two good hours in the dry to get round. Over large moorland sections with small river crossings and some long hills thrown in for good measure it was a course where you could not relax for a minute. The peat bogs were passable as long as you kept your speed up but the odd boulder could stop you dead. And there were plenty of those. Dougie Meek will testify to Rocks 1 - Dougie 0. Coming down a hill and onto a road at speed Doug hit a large rock and ended up 20 yards down the road with his bike carrying on down. Pretty shaken Dougie returned to the start and retired shaken - not stirred. An unfortunate end to a good day.

Kenny Donaldson also ended a cropper but finished the event in 8th. After head butting a rock at speed he looked like he could get a part in Buffy the Vampire Slayer with no makeup. Still at least his helmet worked.

The only part of the course to cause a problem was a bog crossing which cut up badly about 1/2 way round the first check. Taking it careful you could get through but several bikes ended up buried and Yorkshire mud is as sticky as Scots. Once past this it was just a fast trail ride. If it had rained the off camber reed section would have been very tricky indeed.

The first check was before a nice wooded section and gave the Scots lads a taste of home. Passing numerous bits bits of ex Military hardware - tanks, land rovers and other burnt out items reminded riders not to stray from the path. There were numerous bomb holes just waiting if you went a bit wide of the brown line.

The special test was ridden once untimed then straight again. A tight test through the trees with sharp corners it was a test for nimble wee bikes. The approach up the road to the end of the test was a fast blast before a chicane worthy of a border post slowed you at the end.

The Scots managed a good show in the event. Ian Bell - fresh from his outing in the Welsh 2 Day best over 70. Stan Peterson - best over 50, Dougal Walker - Best over 40. Richard McVicker 4th in the clubman class. Charlie Mackenzie (ME) 5th in the Clubman 4 stroke.  James Anthony  in his first event and riding a monster CCM finished on Bronze. Great Ride!

A fantastic days riding and a lot of hard work by the NEEC was really enjoyed by all the riders - but the long day has meant a few aches the next day - so it was no Trail Ride. Same again next year please Ian. Thanks to Steve Potts for organising the marshalls and directing us away from cut up course (I owe you one)
